Chelsea hope to conclude talks with Mauricio Pochettino and hand him the keys to Stamford Bride by the close of the week as they plan for a crucial time at the club.

Frank Lampard who has been appointed caretaker following the sacking of Graham Potter has lost all his four games in charge so far and will attempt to bag his first win when they host Brentford at the Bridge on Wednesday night.

LondonWorld sources say the Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino first turned down the job when he was first offered it but has changed his mind after being assured that he’d be allowed more control and an excellent route back to English football.

The former Tottenham manager last managed French side PSG and was linked with a return to former side Tottenham even though LondonWorld sources say he was never really considered by the board who view German manager Julian Nagelsmann as their ideal candidate.

Nagelsmann, was also considered for the Chelsea job but there were doubts over his tactical and overall understanding of the English game and some say his age, which became a problem at Bayern all culminated in the Chelsea board leaning towards Pochettino.

Why are Chelsea going for a manager who is considered a Tottenham man

Mauricio Pochettino was manager of Tottenham between 2014 to 2019 and he led them o the final of the Champions League where they lost to Liverpool. During his time he guided the likes of Dele Alli, previously unknown in English football to stardom and a young Son Heung-min who he insisted on signing ahead of Saido Berahino into a club legend.

Players like Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane came into their own under the former Espanyol man and Tottenham enjoyed their most successful period seeing youngsters thrive and the culture and the club transform. He did all that despite playing the 2017/2018 season at Wembley as the club built its new stadium.

His biggest attraction is that he gets the best out of youngsters evidenced by the form of his players at Tottenham and tactically he’s considered one of the best available in the market at the moment.

Chelsea have some interesting young players who they have spent a lot of money on and will like to get them up to speed so Pochettino will be tasked with bringing his magic touch to Cobham.

Having given Potter a five-year deal lasting only seven months, it will be interesting to see the length of contract 51-year-old Pochettino will be offered.

It still remains to be seen if he will be drafted in to see out what is left of the campaign or if he’d allow Frank Lampard to continue and he starts from a clean slate in the summer.

Why do some fans have reservations about Pochettino's appointment?

The stick that has been used to beat the Argentine manager is that he is just not a cut-throat winner, despite all the progress that was visible at Spurs there is a feeling that they threw away the chance to win the league title when Leicester won it in 2015. Famously throwing away a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge to draw 2-2 and essentially handing Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes the league title.

Also at PSG, he lost the league title in his first season even though he recovered to win the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France before leaving the following year.

There were still doubts about his man management especially with stars like Lionel Messi who joined PSG from Barcelona and Nermar who were all reported to be unhappy with his style.

Chelsea is a club that has enjoyed unrivaled success under former owner Roman Abramovic, winning the Champions League twice, the Europa League, and multiple league titles among others.

The fact that Pochettino’s most successful years at Tottenham did not end the trophy drought at Spurs has left fans feeling that he’s not an absolute winner.

The fact that he’s also a former Tottenham manager just doesn't sit well with the Chelsea fans and it will be interesting to see the kind of backing he gets from the fans at Stamford Bridge at the first hurdle of the challenge.

But Ultimately, all fans want their teams to win and he can get Chelsea to win football matches, ultimately re-building the culture at the club and managing some of the biggest egos will earn him the respect he demands.

Pochettino will be the first man to move from managing Tottenham to Chelsea, with what is most common is seeing a lot of Chelsea managers moving from the Blues to the Lilywhites.
