Chelsea transfer target Frankie de Jong has reportedly flown to England as speculation over his future continues to dominate the headlines.

The Barcelona midfielder has been the subject of sustained interest from Manchester United throughout the summer but the 13-time Premier League champions have been unable to agree a deal with the La Liga giants.

That has sparked interest from Chelsea, who are said to be keen to add to their midfield ranks this summer.

Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV have claimed De Jong has been filmed at Barcelona airport and is said to be flying to London.

However, a conflicting report from ESPN has suggested the Dutch International’s visit to the UK is not related to any possible transfer to the Premier League after Barca manager Xavi allowed his players to have time off following Sunday’s win against Real Valladolid.

The Athletic have also claimed De Jong is now ‘likely’ to remain at the Camp Nou, despite spending the summer looking set to depart for a Premier League move.

Speaking about De Jong and fellow Chelsea target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Barca legend Xavi said recently: “Frenkie de Jong is not a reserve player, I’ve said that several times. He’s an important player for us.

“I don’t know what will happen, but if Frenkie stays he will be important to us. Just look at the situation he played in today.

“I am counting on him (Aubameyang). I’m really delighted with him, he can help us. Those I am not counting on already know, they know won’t play.

“Between now and 31 August, different things can happen, but I like Auba, he can help us.

“De Jong is the same as Auba, he is important for me. He’s in the squad and we will use him. I don’t know what will happen between now and 31 August, but not just with Frenkie or with Auba, with almost everyone in the squad.”
