Breaking: Chelsea make Enzo Maresca sack decision as club make 'best chance' claim

Chelsea have sacked head coach Enzo Maresca with the Blues having fallen out of the top four.

Chelsea have confirmed the sacking of Enzo Maresca after around 18 months in charge. The Blues achieved Champions League qualification in Maresca’s first season in charge, finishing fifth and qualifying through the Premier League’s extra Champions League spot.

The Blues are on course to finish fifth again after half of the current season, although they have been in the top four for much of the season, recently allowing Liverpool to leapfrog them.

Maresca was brought in to maximise youth talent, with Chelsea focusing on recruiting some of the best young talent from around the world. The Italian has arguably done that, with many feeling as though Chelsea were missing polished and experienced players if they want to take the next step towards being involved in the title race.

But if they pivot to that kind of recruitment, Maresca will not be around to see it. The Italian has spoken out about a lack of support in the club in recent weeks, and amid growing friction, he has now been sacked, with Chelsea deciding on New Year’s Day that a new head coach is their best course of action.

A club statement read: “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Maresca was initially appointed in June of 2024.
