Barcelona are unable to sign former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen until they remove some of their existing players from their wage bill.

The Spanish giants are still in financial trouble and cannot register the Danish centre-back. The player decided to leave Stamford Bridge after changing agents back in December 2021.

Christensen, who was joining Barcelona on a free transfer, was also meant to be joined by AC Milan’s Franck Kessie, but he also is unable to join the side.

Barcelona manager Xavi is attempting to rebuild the club back to the top of European football. The Spanish legend won the Champions League four times with the club in his playing days.

Barcelona faced a similar situation back in January when they could not sign Ferran Torres. To officially register him, they had to move their finances around.

The club’s sporting director Mateu Alemany said in January: “We can’t register Ferran Torres yet, Philippe Coutinho’s loan to Aston Villa is not enough.”

For the Christensen deal to be completed, the club will have to sell some of their players or let them go on a free transfer to reduce their wage bill.

It raises the possibility that the club will be incapable of signing Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski, who they have been heavily linked with.

Until the club rectifies their financial situation, Andreas Christensen will not be a Barcelona player.
