Ex Charlton Athletic boss Michael Appleton set for Premier League job six months after Addicks sack

Former Charlton Athletic head coach Michael Appleton is set to take up a role with Premier League outfit Manchester United, six months after being sacked by the League One club following a dismal run.
The 48-year-old, who came through the Red Devils youth academy as a player, was dismissed from his role at The Valley just 30 minutes after losing to Northampton Town in January. That result was Appleton's 12th match without a win as Addicks boss, leaving the side four points above the third-tier drop zone.

The news comes after Manchester United poached sporting director Dan Ashworth from Premier League rivals Newcastle United - Appleton previously worked alongside Ashworth at West Brom. Former Tranmere Rovers boss Les Parry currently holds the position but, according to The Sun's report, is set to be replaced.
Appleton made just two senior appearances for the Red Devils as a player, despite spending five years at the club as a youngster, before joining Preston North End in 1997. The former midfielder was forced to retire at the age of 27 after a two-year battle with a knee injury.

The ex Charlton head coach was in his role when the club signed Conor Coventry from West Ham in January, as well as defender Macauly Gillesphey from Plymouth Argyle and Rarmani Edmonds-Green from Huddersfield Town. He also helped bring in Lewis Fiorini, Tyreeq Bakinson and Freddie Ladapo on loan to The Valley in January.
