Charlton show intent with West Ham deal

Charlton Athletic continue to show their determination to compete for a play-off place in League One this season by landing the signing of 'steely' West Ham midfielder Conor Coventry. The 23-year-old, who lifted the Europa Conference League trophy with the Hammers last season, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Addicks.

The midfielder made his Premier League debut at West Ham last season and previously played under Michael Appleton while on loan at Lincoln City. Charlton beat interest from rivals including Sheffield Wednesday to land the player in what looks to be a busy January transfer window for the side.

Following the signing, Appleton said: "I'm delighted to be able to be reunited with him on a permanent deal. He's very, very comfortable on the ball and knows his position really well. He's a good passer of the ball, with good technique, and he's got a steeliness to him as well which I like - a bit of nastiness to him. He's one who lives his life right and is a proper professional."

Portsmouth to sign ex Arsenal star

Portsmouth continue to strengthen their impressive title-chasing squad with the imminent addition of former Arsenal and Hibs goalkeeper Matt Macey. The 29-year-old, who spent the back end of last season on loan at Fratton Park, is poised to put pen to paper with the league leaders on a two-year deal.

Macey has been without a club since his release from Luton Town in September and made 21 appearances for Pompey last season, winning over fans as he helped the side climb the table under John Mousinho. The shot-stopper had been entitled to a pay rise at the Hatters after the club's promotion but his wage expectations became out of reach for the side before his release. Macey came through the Arsenal academy and was on the books at the Emirates Stadium between 2014 and 2021.

The keeper is unlikely to challenge Will Norris for the number one spot at Portsmouth but will provide more competition to second-choice Ryan Schofield as the club speeds towards a place in the Championship.
