'Deal Agreed': Charlton Athletic set to sign ex Everton and Wolves star with 198 Premier League appearances

Nathan Jones is set to bolster his defence with a very experienced arrival at Charlton Athletic before the end of the January window.

Charlton Athletic are still licking their wounds following a painful 4-0 thrashing at the hands of London rivals Millwall at The Den last weekend with Nathan Jones’ side now having only kept one clean sheet in their last eight outings.

The Addicks sit 19th in the second tier and are just three points above the relegation zone as Jones bids to avoid dropping straight back to League One. The Welshman was furious with his squad’s lack of effort against Millwall but now looks set to see an experienced defender added to his side, who could help ensure performance levels don’t drop over the back end of the campaign.

Speaking after the 4-0 defeat, Jones said: "We got outworked, out-battled – they treated it as a derby, we treated it as a day in the sun and we got exactly what we deserved. It's not how we work - we work hard, we work a press, we compete, we've had success from doing that.

"We've been bullied all over today. Millwall were excellent. But we were nowhere near that level.”

Charlton Athletic agree deal for ex Everton and Wolves defender

Charlton Athletic have already added Lyndon Dykes, Luke Chambers and Harry Clarke to the squad this month and are now set to see former Everton and Wolves man Conor Coady come through the door as well on a loan deal.

The former England international is currently at Championship rivals Wrexham but has played just six times since joining from Leicester City. Coady signed a two-year deal last summer but Football Insider reports that his long term future is now up in the air.

The outlet adds that Coady is expecting a more regular role at The Valley with a medical booked in for the player. The centre-back will bring plenty of experience with 198 Premier League appearances to his name, as well as 184 outings in the Championship.

Coady also carries a goal threat with 28 goals in his career so far, along with 17 assists. It was a difficult season for the star at Leicester City last time out as the Foxes sunk to relegation.

Conor Coady reflects on Leicester City relegation

Speaking shortly after moving to Wrexham, Coady said: "I don't think I'm speaking out of turn here but Leicester was tough, really tough, people don't understand how tough it was. Last season I found really hard, I struggle when I'm part of a team that's not doing great.

"I go home and the family feel it, the missus feels it, my kids feel it and I take football home. I know I should never say that and I try not to, but I do and I found it really tough, the whole situation had become hard.

"When Wrexham first made contact and said what they wanted to do, straight away I felt... all I wanted to do was just play football and just be part of something good, be as big as we can and just try and make people better.”
