Charlton Athletic eye swoop for Sheffield Wednesday ace amid Owls financial woes - Nathan Jones knows him well

Charlton Athletic are interested in a move for Sheffield Wednesday defender Akin Famewo, with the defender out of contract at Hillsborough at the end of the month.
That is according to a report from the Sheffield Star, who claim the centre-back’s future is still uncertain despite being offered a new deal by the South Yorkshire club.

Famewo spent time on loan at Charlton in 2020 and 2022 so could be open for a third spell with the club. The Addicks are keen to bolster their ranks after beating Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final to secure promotion to the Championship. Wednesday could be powerless to stop a potential move to London given Famewo’s contract situation.
Nathan Jones worked with Akin Famewo at Luton Town
Nathan Jones has put pen to paper on fresh terms with Charlton, committing to a five-year contract with the club. He is looking to ensure the club can maintain their second-tier status next season and is eyeing Championship experience to fill out his squad.
He worked with Famewo when the pair were both at Luton Town. At the age of 26, Famewo is hitting his prime but has had some injury struggles. He hails from Lewisham so a move to Charlton to be closer to home could prove attractive for him.

Sheffield Wednesday under EFL embargo
Famewo’s future could also be decided by Sheffield Wednesday’s current financial situation. The club are officially under embargo from the English Football League after it emerged last week that players and staff at the club did receive their monthly wages on time for the second time in three months.
The last time it occurred was in March, with players and club staff paid on April 7.
Given the financial worries at the club, it could more difficult for the Owls to retain those players coming to the end of their respective deals. There is also uncertainty over Danny Rohl’s future at the club as he is linked with Leicester City. It is another factor that could spell the end for Famewo at Hillsborough, giving Charlton the chance to swoop.
