Charlton Athletic have agreed a fee for Harrogate Town defender Kayne Ramsay with just hours left on the Deadline Day clock.

That's according to South London Press journalist Richard Cawley, who wrote on X: "Charlton Athletic have agreed a fee for Harrogate Town right-sided defender Kayne Ramsay." It's an exciting move for the Addicks, with the 23-year-old having Premier League experience under his belt and his best years still ahead of him.

The defender started his career at the Chelsea youth academy before moving to Southampton and breaking into the first team in 2018. Ramsay made his debut for the club in October 2018 in a top-flight match against Champions Manchester City and the player became the youngest starter in the Premier League that season.

A series of loan spells followed for the youngster, to Shrewsbury Town, Crewe Alexandra and Ross County. He then joined Harrogate Town on a permanent deal in August 2022, making his debut on the same day.

Ramsay has been a key part of Harrogate Town's League Two campaign so far this season, picking up five assists from the back in 30 appearances across all competitions. Harrogate Town sit eighth in the fourth division.

The defender has received praise wherever he has been in recent years. After a spell at Ross County, Malky Mackay hailed his 'tremendous personality' while Shrewsbury Town manager Sam Ricketts once said: "[He is] extremely athletic, can carry the ball and drive the play forward and has strong potential."

Last season, the player suffered a 'horror facial injury' in a match against Carlisle United and missed two months of action as he underwent surgery on multiple fractures, damage to an eye socket, cheekbone and his jaw.

On his return, Simon Weaver said: "I’ll never forget the state of him when he got injured, it was haunting really, but he has come back well from that Carlisle nightmare which he must have had nightmares about, but he’s been strong."
