Charlton 0-0 Portsmouth: three 8/10s as the Addicks battle to keep clean sheet

Despite a full away stand, Charlton showed promise under Nathan Jones' management

The Addicks were greeted to a physical and lively display at the Valley Stadium with the away stand completely washing out any trace of red with the dominating Portsmouth sea of blue. However, this did not face Nathan Jones's squad as they managed to resist any temptation to let pressure wear them down and secured a 0-0 draw against the side dominating the League One top spot.

The first 30 minutes offered signs of hope from both sides with the Addick’s Daniel Kanu having a wonderful strike hit the goal post within the opening five minutes. This was then quickly followed by a response from Pompey of their own but Harry Isted was quick to flick clear the powerful shot strike.

While both sides enjoyed box-to-box runs, neither club appeared comfortable when presented with the opportunity of the goal. The first half ended 0-0 despite defensive failings from both the Addicks and Pompey, providing ample chance for glory to be found.

It was a positive start in the second-half for the Addicks with Alfie May charging up the pitch. However, the striker - who has been one of the league's top scorers this season - soon saw his efforts dwindle away as the players in red appeared to panic whenever entering the box.

Similarly to their players, the Charlton faithful also found a new lease of life in the break and were soon able to compete with the chants from the opposing end. Whether Nathan Jones had provided an endless supply of energy drinks, or it was the reaction from the crowd, but a new-found character on the pitch was found.

Ultimately neither side converted their midfield prowess into securing three points but for the Addicks - who sit in 20th after their latest draw - it was a promising display with Thierry Small and Karoy Anderson dominating the pitch.

The game was far from the cleanest with both fanbases frequently offering the referee their fruity opinions on potential fouls, yellow cards and free-kick opportunities. Charlton, however, were in no mind to leak any goals today and the noise from the Valley stands did nothing but cheer them on further. While they may have struggled to find the net at the other end, keeping the current league leaders at bay is something for which Jones will be exceptionally proud of his squad with defence taking top marks from both sides.
