Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has confirmed that the club has accepted a bid from Charlton Athletic for proven League One striker Jonson Clarke-Harris. The 29-year-old is now in discussions with the Addicks over contract details ahead of the blockbuster move.

Clarke-Harris, who has 104 League One goals in his career, had been expected to leave the Posh in January after a foiled move to Bristol Rovers last summer but it was reported last week that Charlton could face late competition from a League Two club. Speaking ahead of Peterborough United's FA Cup defeat to Leeds United, manager Darren Ferguson said: "A bid has been accepted by Charlton. It’s up to the player now to agree personal terms and I don’t think we’re at that stage yet.”

Clarke-Harris has been in and out of the Peterborough United side this season, starting the majority of matches early on before becoming an option from the bench since October. He was not in the side's squad at Elland Road nor for the trip to Derby County on New Year's Day but did bag a brace when last called upon against Barnsley at the end of December.

The former Rotherham and Coventry City man has been praised by Ferguson for his attitude this season and, should he finalise details at Charlton, will arrive with a big reputation. Speaking after his Barnsley goals, Ferguson said: “Jonno knows his time is up at the club as he’s likely to get a move in January. He’s a great example of someone who has trained well and been great with the younger players.

“There is no striker better than him in the box in the league – simple as that. Once we started getting quality into the box, he scored goals. I thought he was great, and if we had got the penalty – and we must surely be due one – he would have taken it and probably ended up with a hat-trick.”

It had previously been reported that Charlton had offered League One rivals Peterborough up to £450,00 for Clarke-Harris but that owner Darragh MacAnthony had batted away that offer and demanded a larger sum. Before Leeds United, Ferguson added: “We have a valuation on each individual player. If a club meets that, we’ll let that player go and speak with them – try and arrange personal terms. That really is the simple equation.

“We’ve always maintained it has to be the figure the chairman sets, which is predominantly quite a high one – but for the right reason, because we have got real quality. The two obvious ones are Jonno, there has been a lot of interest and some bids in, and then you have got Ronnie. There is speculation about Ronnie all the time. The chairman has assured me those two are the only ones that are going to get sold in the January window.”
