Liverpool suffer injury double injury blow ahead of Brentford clash as Virgil van Dijk worry emerges

Liverpool face Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday ahead of their Premier League clash with Brentford on Sunday

Liverpool will be without midfielder Curtis Jones against Brentford on Sunday while summer arrival Ryan Gravenberch could also miss the contest against the Bees after being left out of the squad for Thursday's Europa League clash in Toulouse.

Jones was absent as the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw at Luton Town on Sunday but Gravenberch is a fresh injury worry after picking up a minor knee problem which could rule him out against Brentford.

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk has not been included in the squad against Toulouse due to illness but Jurgen Klopp is confident the influential defender will be back in the squad against Brentford on Sunday.

“Virgil is a little bit ill,” Klopp said. “It will not be a big thing but we did not want to have him on the plane, if some others have it as well. I have it a little bit but for me it is not a problem, that’s why we left him at home. He should be absolutely alright for the weekend.”

Jones' injury, which he picked up last week against Bournemouth, has been revealed as a 'low-grade' hamstring strain with the midfielder due back after the international break, as he is definitely set to be ruled out against the Bees.

“Ryan got a little niggle of the knee,” added Klopp. “It is not major, he was running already today [Wednesday], but [there was] no chance for this game. We hope there is a chance for Brentford, and he will definitely be back after the international break. That’s why he’s not here. Curtis had a hamstring [injury] last week. Not massive. After the international break he will be back, but not before.

“[It is a] low, low-grade hamstring. He was in good shape, [got a] red card, lack of rhythm, got the Europa League games and then in the game at Bournemouth he didn’t feel anything there when I took him off, but then I went in the dressing room and I think he felt a little bit the hamstring, so we made a scan. Very low grade, but it took him out."
