Arsenal's mighty €583m ten-year net spend compared to Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham & more

Nicolas Pepe and Romelu Lukaku mark out Arsenal and Chelsea’s biggest spends in the last ten years as Arsenal hit top five biggest European spenders.

Arsenal have seen an exceptionally turbulent few years in their success rate, struggling to make it into the top four Premier League standings yet still achieving success in the FA Cup.

In 2014, Arsene Wenger led Arsenal to the end of a seven-year trophy drought when the FA Cup was won for the fifth time under the French manager.

But Wenger’s departure has once more seen the club fluctuate in its success and Mikel Arteta will hope to restore some faith in a post-Covid battle back to the top.

A new report from the CIES Football Observatory has revealed the greatest net spends for the top five European football leagues in the past ten years with six clubs on the list having net spends higher than €500 million.

The Gunners are not only one of these clubs but they have reached the top five for highest net-spends in the past ten years compared to London rivals Chelsea who have a net spend of €413m and currently sit tenth.

Arsenal’s biggest signing has been Nicolas Pepe from Lille who joined for a club record fee of €85 million.

In comparison, Chelsea’s purchase of Romelu Lukaku was not only their record transfer but also the second most expensive in Premier League history.

The €116 million spend will have made up for the Blues’ transfer ban they endured in 2019/20. Roman Abramovich’s reign in charge has ensured Chelsea have continued to remain big spenders but their Trophy case has been rewarded for their spends.

In the past ten years, Chelsea have won four FA Cups, two Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Leagues, a Community Shield and a UEFA Super Cup.

While Tottenham and West Ham have reportedly seen quieter transfer seasons than their London counterparts, they have also seen less silverware reach their grounds, thus highlighting that, unlike Manchester United’s shocking spending, Arsenal and Chelsea have been rewarded more consistently for their output.

Here’s a look at how all the Premier League’s current clubs shape up in the rankings:
