WSL attendances: 21 brilliant pictures of fans in the stands as Arsenal and Manchester United win big
Fans flocked to stadiums all around the country this weekend to witness the return of the Women’s Super League.
The much-anticipated restart was delayed by a week as the death of Her Majesty the Queen caused the matches of the opening weekend to be postponed.
A battle between last season’s Champions League rivals and two of the ‘big three’ were set to kick off the campaign, with the Amex and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expected to host hordes of new fans attracted to the support by the successes of Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses at Euro 2022.
Despite changes of venue, the new opening weekend was not without drama as newcomers Liverpool overcame holders Chelsea, and Manchester City were turned over by Aston Villa in a seven-goal thriller.
Six thousand seven hundred and thirty eight fans showed up to see Carla Ward’s side beat the Sky Blues at Villa Park, while just over 3,000 watched the Reds beat the champions.
Manchester United’s 4-0 thrashing of Reading attracted a crowd of 5,315, while 3,238 fans watched Arsenal beat Brighton and Hove Albion at Borehamwood.
The King Power Stadium hosted 2,868 supporters watching Leicester City lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur, while just over 1,000 fans watched West Ham United edge a 1- win over Everton.
