Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained that he was forced to leave out top scorer Emile Smith Rowe after the young midfielder fell ill during the week.

The young English midfielder was absent from both the first eleven and the bench despite scoring the opening goal to take his goal tally to nine in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal fans were wondering what had happened after his blistering showing against Brentford that got the Gunners all three points and the fact that their manager had told the press that there were no fresh injury concerns heading into the game.

However all nerves were calmed when the Spanish manager revealed pre-game that it was due to illness.

Emile Smith Rowe benefited from the suspension of Gabriel Martinelli and got a start against Brentford where he opened the scoring before Bukayo Saka added second to all but seal victory.

Brentford got a consolation goal later on through Christian Nørgaard but at that Emile Rowe had already been subbed for an early shower in anticipation of the next game.

With games against Watford, Leicester and Liverpool on the horizon, Arteta will hope the goal-scoring midfielder is back in time to provide him with options ahead of as they push for a Champions League spot next season.

The Gunners are currently a goal down after Hwang Hee-chan took advtange of a miscommunication in the Arsenal defence to put his side ahead.

Since then the Gunner have dominated possesion, creating chances but failing to find the back of the net in the first half.

But substitute Nicolas Pepe scored the equalising goal ten minutes to time before an own goal from Wolves defender Sa gave the home side all three points on the day.
