'There is a possibility' - Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal can still add much-needed Gabriel Martinelli competition

Arsenal have been handed a lifeline as Mikel Arteta considers pulling off a winger signing this summer.

Arsenal could yet strengthen out wide with a top-end winger before the end of the summer window despite prioritising other areas this summer. Mikel Arteta has wanted more competition out wide with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both being heavily relied upon across the last two years.

Martinelli’s performance in the opening weekend win over Wolves will have added to that desire, too, with the Brazilian struggling to create any sort of danger on his side, while Saka put on a superb performance on the other side.

Despite the Gunners having a need to add competition out wide, they have moved to bolster other areas this summer, with left-sided defender Riccardo Calafiori signed for big money, while centre-midfielder Mikel Merino set to be signed next. Arteta will then likely have to choose between snapping up a new striker or a new winger, unlikely to choose a player who can play both, given he already has that sort of player at the club between Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal arguably need an out-and-out striker and an out-and-out winger, but getting both might be tricky unless all of the transfer listed players are sold on permanent deals. There may yet be some hope, though, with Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman potentially available and on a loan deal, which could suit the Gunners.

“Yes, there is a possibility for him (Coman) to move because Bayern are opening to finding a solution. Bayern are looking for opportunities for him on the market,” transfer ‘insider’ Fabrizio Romano told CaughtOffside.

“It could be For Barca, an idea, because he could be available on initial loan, maybe with a buy close, but that could be a possibility. And for Barca, it’s crucial to make some space in terms of financial, so in order to pay the salary of Kingsley Coman. Let’s see also in England, let’s see also PSG, what happens. There could be opportunities for Coman. So I’m sure there is going to be a busy end of the window for his camp, but the expectation is for Coman to take an opportunity, try something different also, because for Bayern, this is a really important move in terms of outgoings.”
