It was another weekend of drama in the Premier League with the North London derby headlining the action

There was yet more VAR drama in the Premier League this weekend as the technology had a say on the outcome of the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

The sides drew 2-2 with Cristian Romero’s own goal and Bukayo Saka’s penalty twice giving the Gunners the lead only for Son Heung-min to draw Spurs level twice.

Arsenal’s second goal came from the penalty spot after Romero was penalised for handling in the area after a close-range shot from Ben White. Referee Rob Jones awarded the spot kick after advice from VAR.

The decision split opinion but former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher insisted it was the correct one. He said on Sky Sports: “Does Romero use his arms to balance for what he’s going into? Yes. But his arms are out, it strikes his arm. It blocks the shot going in.

“He might feel hard done by to concede a penalty, but he’s lucky because if Bissouma wasn’t behind him, he would have also been sent off as it was heading to the goal with no defender. His arm is out, VAR has seen it, it’s heading towards the goal. It didn’t surprise me when I saw the replay.”
