Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League table would still be intact - but only just - if VAR was not implemented in the division this season.

The technology caused more frustration for Gunners supporters on Sunday as an apparent handball by Declan Rice in the build-up to a West Ham penalty was not spotted as Arsenal drew 2-2 in the Premier League.

Rice won the ball off Thomas Partey, and then found Lucas Paqueta who was fouled by Gabriel Magalhaes as David Coote pointed to the spot.

VAR checked the penalty decision and agreed with the on-field call. Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher explained why the decision was not overturned by VAR, as the handball incident could not be considered.

He said: “It didn’t lead directly to a goal, so therefore, it can’t be ruled out for that, it led to a penalty. They have to be convinced that was a deliberate handball.”

Arsenal had led 2-0 but Said Benrahma scored from the spot before Jarrod Bowen levelled matters, as Bukayo Saka missed from the spot.

As VAR again came under the spotlight last weekend, we looked at how the table may look without it by seeing how games may have finished without goals being overturned or ruled out.

Arsenal would remain top but would see their lead cut by Man City while Tottenham Hotspur would be behind Brighton while West Ham would be further clear of the relegation places.

Outside of London, there would be an extra five points for Brighton in their bid for European football, while Liverpool would be seven points worse off.
