Newcastle United player given one-game ban after what happened against Arsenal

Arsenal's clash with Newcastle United has made plenty of headlines over the weekend, but many missed a key moment.

The Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Arsenal made plenty of headlines after controversy aplenty at St James' park. The Magpies came out on top, with Anthony Gordon scoring the all-important winner.

Though, the goal was reviewed by VAR for no less than three incidents, with the ball potentially going out of play, with Gabriel Magalhaes on the other end of a push and with a question of offside. When the review was concluded, the goal was given, and Arsenal couldn't recover, struggling to create chances against the hard-to-beat Newcastle.

After the game, the controversy continued, with Mikel Arteta exploding into a rant about the standard of refereeing, while Arsenal also put out a statement that has been highly criticised. Former referee Mark Clettengburg weighed in on the incidents in his Daily Mail column, saying: "The whole goal didn’t feel right and if there was a moment to disallow it then it was this as Joelinton clearly pushed Gabriel."

He added: "There wasn’t a camera angle available to the VAR that could have conclusively ruled that the ball was out of play, so the on-field decision has to stand."

One thing some missed during the game, though, was the yellow card picked up by Bruno Guimaraes, and it was a crucial yellow card indeed. That yellow card was a fifth this season for the Brazilian, and he will now be suspended for one game. Guimaraes will miss this weekend's clash with AFC Bournemouth, returning after the international break in time to face Chelsea. Crucially, the midfielder is now halfway to the 10-yellow card mark that will see him earn a two-game suspension should he reach it.
