Mikel Arteta praised Kai Havertz for 'overcoming challenges' after the German scored Arsenal's winner against Brentford.

The 24-year-old signed from Chelsea in a £65million deal over the summer, but has failed to impress so far.

However, on Saturday evening the German international headed Arteta's side in the lead at the Gtech Community Stadium following an excellent cross by Bukayo Saka.

After the game, Arteta made a point of bringing Havertz over to the Arsenal away fans so he could receive congratulations from them.

"That is the beautiful thing about life," said Arteta.

"When you have challenges and you have to overcome them, it makes the moments much more. That is the reason the people reacted to him like that today.

"It is because he is adorable and he is a joy to work with and he fully deserves more than anybody to get that win."

“I think the most important is always the team,” said Havertz afterwards, “and to have the three points is very good for me as well, personally you know. I worked quite hard to get these moments again and today, I got it so I’m very, very happy.

“We came here to win and it’s a very good feeling to go home with three points.

“The ball was perfect,” he said of Saka’s cross to the far post. “That's something we also trained a lot in training and I thought maybe I go there, so hopefully the ball arrives and it arrived perfect so I'm happy to score.”
