Arsenal favourite turned pundit Martin Keown was left unimpressed with his old side’s ‘flat’ performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Gunners were dumped out of the competition at the quarter-final stage after Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header.

Mikel Arteta’s men rarely tested their hosts and mailed in a hugely disappointing performance devoid of creativity and gusto. The Gunners allowed Bayern to progress without needing to produce anything special, with Thomas Tuchel’s men simply executing the basics very well on Wednesday evening, with their visitors failing to ask any real questions.

The performance will leave Arsenal fans furious, especially after they saw their side potentially lose the Premier League title with a home defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend, handing the advantage to Manchester City. As for the Bayern defeat, Gunners legend Keown has issued his verdict on TNT Sports, and it’s one fans will likely agree with.

"I feel as flat as the performance,” he said after the game. “It was very disappointing and it was kind of summed up in the end there. Saka for some reason takes a really free-kick when there’s an opportunity to really test the goalkeeper right at the end.

“They were quite flat within the game and there was no real urgency in the closing stages. Hugely disappointing. It feels like we didn’t lay a glove on them. I feel like Arsenal never really gave a proper account of themselves, and it’s one of those where, when it matters most, we just don’t seem to be able to deliver.”

The free-kick Keown refers to came in the penultimate play of the game, deep into stoppage time. Arsenal were awarded a free-kick no more than 30 yards from goal, and despite being in shooting range, Saka attempted a quick free-kick that only resulted in a corner - a corner that did not clear the first man, no less.
