Fury over Ivan Toney sell-on report amid Newcastle and Arsenal £100m transfer claim
Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has shared an expletive message online as rumours that former Posh star Ivan Toney could complete a move from Brentford to Arsenal.
The England international will return from his eight-month ban later this month and, although Bees manager Thomas Frank has shared his belief that the striker will stay in West London, reports linking the Gunners with a blockbuster move for the marksman continue. The deal looks to be a complicated one with reports that Brentford are keen to have Toney sign a new contract this January with a built-in release clause that will ensure he helps the side avoid a relegation battle in the Premier League this season before moving on this summer.

Hide AdAdded details in the contract come in the fact that Toney's former clubs Peterborough United and Newcastle United are also set to receive a proportion of any transfer fee paid to Brentford for the star, who bagged 20 top-flight goals last season. The 27-year-old joined League One side Peterborough United from Newcastle United in 2018, where he bagged 49 goals in 94 appearances before joining Brentford for £10 million in 2020.
On Tuesday, Sky Sports presenter Mark McAdam issued an update on the ongoing transfer saga during The Transfer Show. He said: "We know that both Arsenal and Chelsea are in the market for a top-class striker, which Ivan Toney is of course. It could happen, however we know that Thomas Frank has joked about £100 million plus. That's the price tag that's on his head, although Brentford don't want to sell him.
"One thing I want to add to this, Peterborough and Newcastle will be monitoring and watching this situation very closely because it was "Peterborough that sold Ivan Toney to Brentford, they have a 30% sell-on and 30% of that goes to Newcastle. So, for example, if he went for £100 million, £30 million would go to Peterborough and £9 million to Newcastle, so there will be a lot of clubs hoping he makes a big money move."
A £30 million fee would be a huge bee in the bonnet of the League One side, who currently sit third in the Third Tier and are chasing promotion to the Championship once again after last season's play-off heartbreak at Sheffield Wednesday. However, Posh supporters shouldn't get too excited with chairman MacAnthony quoting the Sky Sports clip and branding it as 'misinformation'.
