A former Arsenal and Manchester United transfer target is reportedly unhappy at his current club.

Former Arsenal and Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt is believed to be 'not happy' at Bayern Munich - he is not receiving the amount of playing time that he would like - additionally, the German giants are also looking to bring another centre-back to the club, which would see him fall further still down the pecking order.

As such, the 24-year-old could look to move away from the Allianz Arena, according to journalist Florian Plettenburg on X (formerly Twitter) - which would open the door for the Gunners or the Red Devils to swoop in. Both clubs have encountered issues at the back this season - and de Ligt is still considered one of the world's leading defenders.

His playing time for Bayern has been limited this season, however. He has played in just 12 games in all competitions thus far, scoring a solitary goal along the way.

Could Arsenal reinvigorate their interest in Matthijs de Ligt?

While a move to the Emirates Stadium for de Ligt would certainly capture the headlines, there is nothing to indicate that Arsenal will pursue a move for the Dutch international any time soon. While the Gunners could use an extra man in their back line, it seems like they will look towards other targets, as opposed to De Ligt.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are believed to be firmly in the race for his signature. They will not make a move for him in the January transfer window, but they could ramp up their efforts in the summer - assuming head coach Erik ten Hag is still in place by that point. United have struggled at the back this season due to injuries sustained by Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane - bringing de Ligt on board would be an excellent way to strengthen their defensive depth.
