Arsenal lead race for world-class winger who has 'demanded' £175,000-per-week contract

Arsenal are said to be winning the race to sign a world-class winger this summer.

Arsenal will now be under even more pressure to sign an attacker during the summer transfer window having been left short for the end of the season. The Gunners have now lost Kai Havertz to a hamstring injury for the rest of the season, and the German joins Gabriel Jesus in the treatment room.

That means Arteta has no out-and-out striker to rely upon between now and the end of the season, while Bukayo Saka is also out for another month, leaving the attack looking very stripped back.

Arteta wanted an attacking signing during the January window, but the club failed to procure one, something that has already come back to haunt the Gunners. There isn’t much that Arsenal can do about that at this point, but they do know they have to invest significantly in the summer, with both a striker and a winger signing now likely.

Athletic Club’s Nico Williams appears to be the best option when it comes to a winger, with the Spain international carrying a release clause of £48.3million, although the clause has to be paid upfront to be activated. Though, that’s not to say Arsenal can hash out a deal with the Basque club.

Athletic Club are a very cash rich club, so they are not under any pressure financially, but Williams has stood by them this season, and if the winger does want to go this summer, they make it easier to move on, even if it is just a case of allowing a buying club to pay in instalments, as is often the case with transfers involving this much money.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal are the ‘most likely’ to win the race for the winger’s signature, with Barcelona, Manchester City and others expressing interest ahead of the summer. Nacional Cat report that Williams will want a salary package worth £9.1million per year, which works out at around £175,000-per-week. That’s a wage Arsenal could well commit to in order to land one of the most dangerous players in world football.
