They finished in the top eight of the league phase, meaning that they automatically qualified for the round of 16. They play against PSV, who got through thanks to a play-off where they beat Serie A giants Juventus over two legs.

PSV will welcome Arsenal to the Netherlands for the first leg of their tie on Tuesday night, which kicks off at 8pm. It is the first game for Arsenal since their disappointing Premier League draw against Nottingham Forest last time out.

PSV injury news

Arsenal’s opponents have a relatively fit squad with just four players who could miss the game on Tuesday night. They have one player ruled out with three players in doubt.

Firstly, Esmir Bajraktarević remains out as he is dealing with a long-term injury which has limited him to just three Eredivisie appearances so far this season for PSV. He is set to return later in March.

Striker Ricardo Pepi is a doubt for the game on Tuesday as he is dealing with a minor knee injury. He’s been useful in the Champions League so far this season, scoring two goals and contributing one assist in seven games.

Furthermore, 22-year-old midfielder Malik Tillman has been dealing with an ankle injury which has made him a doubt for the game against Arsenal. He would be a big loss after scoring seven goals in 18 league games this season.

Finally, full-back Sergino Dest is also in doubt for the match on Tuesday as he is recovering from a knee injury, it is not yet clear whether he is likely to play.

Arsenal injury news

Arsenal will be without five players for the Champions League game on Tuesday night. Firstly, strikers Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are out for the rest of the season, leaving Arteta without a fit striker for the game.

Jesus will be out for a longer period after undergoing surgery on his ACL. Havertz’s injury is relating to his hamstring, and he will look to return at the start of next season.

Takehiro Tomiyasu will also be out for the remainder of the season after undergoing a second surgery on his knee after a long term injury that he suffered in the summer with Japan.

Gabriel Martinelli is getting closer to a return as he continues to recover from his hamstring injury. He is likely to return after the next international break which comes later in March.

Bukayo Saka is also out with a hamstring injury. He is on a similar timeline to Martinelli. Arteta said last week: “Bukayo and Gabi are progressing really well but are still a bit far from coming back.”

Neither of the attacking pair were seen as Arsenal held their opening training session on Monday.
