The former Gunners midfield also praised the Premier League runners-up for their impressive domestic season, as he prepares for a busy summer transfer window in order to strengthen the first team squad.

“I think we are all happy to see the progression of the team and the club. That’s the main reason we feel proud of the season. To be fair, we have the taste that we could make something really special.

“We have to respect what we have done and must keep going in the right direction, keep the mentality to try and win important things. Let’s keep going in the direction we planned. Let’s keep going for next season.”

As the summer transfer window approaches, Edu is actively involved in negotiations alongside Director of Football Operations Richard Garlick and the club’s legal team.

The club is determined to bolster the squad with strategic signings in midfield and defence, with Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo and Ilkay Gundogan among the players being looked at.

“We work in the best way possible,” said Edu.

“We try to do as best as we can to make this squad stronger and better. That’s our main purpose, to see the progression and to see the club moving forward in the right direction.”

RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan has been targeted in defence, while Joao Cancelo is also being looked at as a potential addition at fullback.

There will also be a number of outgoings with Granit Xhaka set to leave the club shortly and Kieran Tierney facing an uncertain future.
