Arsenal player ratings from Bayern Munich defeat as one scores 3/10 and two score 4/10

Rating the players from Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday to cap a hugely disappointing week, putting on a performance desperately lacking in desire at the Allianz Arena. The Gunners contained Bayern for large spells but found themselves dominated by their hosts for large spells of the second half, in particular.

Clear-cut chances were hard to come by against an organised Bayern, but Arsenal lacked conviction throughout and did little to disrupt their hosts, who only needed to do the basics well to win this game. The winning goal came in the form of a second-half Joshua Kimmich header. Ben White failed to close down the cross with any sort of desire, and Gabriel Martinelli lost Kimmich, allowing the Germany international to head home unmarked despite being surrounded by Gunners shirts.

Mikel Arteta responded with attacking changes, but it made little difference, with only Gabriel Jesus playing with any kind of urgency until the final minutes, when the Gunners got a little more frantic, finally realising they were about to crash out of the Champions League. The reaction came too late. You cannot afford to play in such a lifeless manner away from home in the Champions League quarter-finals and expect to progress.
