Arsenal and Liverpool dealt huge £75m transfer blow in Newcastle United masterstroke

The Gunners joined Liverpool in being linked with a £75 million move for the player this summer.

Arsenal and Liverpool will struggle to lure Anthony Gordon away from Newcastle United in upcoming transfer windows as news emerges from Tyneside today that the forward had put pen to paper on a new deal with the Magpies.

The England international was the centre of transfer speculation this summer with the Gunners and Reds linked with a £75 million swoop for the 23-year-old. Newcastle United were known to have issues complying with the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules, which added fuel to the fire of transfer rumours.

Liverpool emerged as early candidates, despite the player's strong links with Merseyside rivals Everton, with the player believed to have been interested in a move to Anfield while on international duty with Reds stars at Euro 2024. However, as the summer went on, it was the Gunners who emerged as the most likely to complete a deal if one was to happen.

Newcastle United agree new contract

Newcastle United paid £45 million to sign the former Toffees man in January 2023 and he has just over 18 months left on his current deal. NewcastleWorld reports that Gordon's lucrative new contract will keep him at the club until 2030.

Speaking to the press ahead of this weekend's meeting with Manchester City, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said: “We love Anthony. We’d love him to commit his future here. We’d love him to stay long-term at Newcastle and continue his excellent start to his career here.

“When you look at the broader piece of what he’s done since he’s arrived at the football club, I think he’s been magnificent for us. We need to try and help him get back to his very best levels. And if that means signing a new contract, then I’m all for that, to help him be settled and concentrate on his football.”

Gordon not affected by Arsenal and Liverpool links

Howe was also asked about the summer transfer rumours with Arsenal and Liverpool hovering over the player but insisted that Gordon has remained focused on the project in the North East. He said: “Anthony is still the same lad. He’s still very, very focused on his career and very focused on his performance. He wants to do well, he wants to do well for Newcastle.

“I think like a number of other players, he’s a bit frustrated, and that frustration in a performance or a game can manifest itself in a number of different ways. We need to be mindful of that and control it.”
