The Best FIFA Football Awards 2023 took place last night, hosted by Arsenal icon Thierry Henry and Tottenham Hotspur fan Reshmin Chowdhury. Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola and Mary Earps all picked up various awards - but it was a comment made by Henry that had football fans in North London talking.

Messi was not present at the ceremony to accept The Best FIFA Player award, so Henry spoke on his behalf. During his speech, he handed the award over to Chowdhury, mocking her by saying that 'You don't usually get your hands on a trophy', to a bout of raucous laughter from the crowd.

Chowdhury is a well-respected sports journalist who has been active since 2000 and has supported Spurs for her whole life. Henry, meanwhile, needs no introduction - one of the greatest Premier League players of all time, he won two Premier League titles with the Gunners and picked up a Champions League trophy during his time at Barcelona, where he played alongside Messi.

What did Thierry Henry say about Tottenham?

Speaking to Chowdhury on stage, Henry said: "Unfortunately, the winner is not here, so someone is going to have to take the trophy. I will take it. I mean I came. I actually have two reasons for taking it. I never won it, so I'll keep it. And you are a Tottenham fan right? You usually don't get your hands on a trophy, so I'll take this one. Thank you very much."

The other players and coaches who picked up awards at the ceremony included Aitana Bonmatí, Sarina Wiegman, Ederson, Guilherme Madruga and Marta. Competition for the best men's player award was fierce - while Messi ultimately came out on top, he faced opposition from the likes of Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Kevin De Bruyne (who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively).
