Arsenal injury latest ahead of PSV and Tottenham as Mikel Arteta handed major concern

Arsenal are now preparing for a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven as they open their European campaign.

The Gunners saw off Everton away from home on Sunday, with Leandro Trossard scoring the all-important winner to ensure Mikel Arteta’s men kept pace with the early front-runners. Arsenal now turn attention to Wedensday’s Champions League opener with PSV, and they will be keen to get off to a winning start, but Arteta does have some forward planning to do.

That’s because this weekend brings the latest installment of the North London derby, and that will be an important test for Arsenal to pass.

Ahead of the clash, Arsenal have a number of injury concerns, and here we run through the latest issues.

Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli picked up an injury concern during the win over Everton, and Arteta has said the winger will need to be assessed before determining whether he will be fit for PSV and/or Tottenham.

Arteta said: “He felt, I think, something in the action in the run for the goal. He’s not normally a player to have muscular issues, but he had to come off. Let’s see.”

Thomas Partey

Partey remains sidelined at this point, and he is not likely to see action until after the next international break, reducing Arsenal’s depth in midfield, although the Ghanaian has played full-back more times than not this season.

Arteta said of Partey: “He’s still a few weeks away. He’s got a muscle injury. He’s progressing well, but he’s still a few weeks away.”

Mohamed Elneny

Elneny recovering from a long-term knee injury that saw him miss last season, but he is close to returning to action.

Arteta said of the midfielder: “He has been training with us, he had a little niggle in his hamstring a few weeks ago and he is back in training now. Obviously it’s been a long-term injury, the latter stages of that rehab right now and then it’s about building momentum and game time with him.”

Jurrien Timber

Arsenal are not likely to see big-money signing Timber again this season after he suffered a long-term knee injury during his Premier League debut.

There is no timeline for Timber’s return at this point, but given it is an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, he will be lucky if he gets back before the end of the season. The centre-back will be hoping to see some action before the season ends, especially as he could be vying for a spot in the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 squad, should they qualify.
