Arsenal are back in Premier League action this weekend after stunning Real Madrid in the Champions League

Arsenal gave their season a renewed sense of optimism on Tuesday night as they recorded a memorable 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s scored three times in the second half thanks to two stunning free-kicks from Declan Rice and a well-taken goal from makeshift striker Mikel Merino. As things stand, the Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain look set for a potential semi-final meeting after Luis Enrique’s side beat Aston Villa 3-1 in France on Wednesday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side are now preparing for a return to Premier League action as they host London rivals Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening. Arsenal are 11 points behind Liverpool with seven games remaining after the Gunners drew 1-1 at Everton last weekend while the Reds were beaten 3-2 by Fulham. Arne Slot’s side are in action on Sunday afternoon against West Ham United and will be eager to avoid any more slip-ups to allow the door to creep open for the Gunners.

How many points Arsenal need to win Premier League title - according to Opta

Despite Liverpool’s loss last weekend, the statistical experts at Opta are forecasting them to pick up around 87 points by the end of the campaign. That is four fewer than Manchester City claimed last season to win the title and two fewer than the Gunners as they finished second.

Arsenal are being predicted to pick up 76 points, which would be a total of 14 from their final seven games. They can only get a maximum of 83 points and are highly likely going to need to hit that tally in order to have any chance of winning the title. Opta’s forecast hints that even if the Gunners can get maximum points from their final seven games that Liverpool will still manage to get more than that total to get over the line and win the title.

However, the Gunners can take hope from the Reds’ form of late as Slot’s side have lost three of their last four games in all competitions. Crucially for the title race, however, just one of those defeats has been in the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher theorises how Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot will be feeling about title race

Speaking on Monday Night Football this week, former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher insisted that both Slot and Arteta would not feel that the title race is over yet.

He said: “I’m convinced everybody in this country thinks Liverpool have won the title - besides Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, and besides Arne Slot and Liverpool. Liverpool will be thinking about complacency, don’t throw it away, and I’m convinced Mikel Arteta will be telling them ‘if we win every game, we can win this league.’

“He’ll have to try and give them some belief to keep winning games, and I think how angry he was [after Everton draw] - he probably felt Liverpool would drop points in the game against Fulham, Arsenal have got Liverpool to play as well. I was sort of taken aback at how angry he was actually, and it just made me think he’s probably still trying to instil that belief in the squad.”
