Arsenal 'enter race' for Newcastle United target ahead of the summer transfer window

Arsenal are poised to make a move for a Newcastle United target in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Arsenal are set to resume their interest of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in the summer transfer window - even if he is not their top target, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

The Toffees are currently in the relegation zone, having been deducted ten points earlier in the season for previous breaches of UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations. A second points deduction could be on the horizon - should this take place, they would face a mammoth task in their quest to remain in the Premier League. Should Everton be relegated, Arsenal could take Onana from Goodison Park for a lesser fee than what it would be should they stay up.

The Gunners aren't alone in their pursuit of Onana's signature, as moneybags clubs Newcastle United are also interested. Everton will have a massive fight on their hands if they want to keep him in Merseyside - however, his next destination is unclear as of yet.

What would Amadou Onana bring to the Arsenal squad?

While Arsenal have plenty of technically-adept players in the middle of the park, such as Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, but they are somewhat lacking in physically dominant defensive midfielders. Thomas Partey and Jorginho are both beyond their best years and are out of contract in the summer - bringing Onana to the club, with his versatile skill set, would be a great way to replace them.

At the age of 22, Onana's best years in football are still theoretically well ahead of him. Arteta would have plenty of time to mould him into the player that he wants him to be and could allow him to realise his true potential if he is snapped up in the summer. This season, Onana has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and notching up a single assist.
