Arsenal discover new Wolves asking price for Matheus Cunha after Mikel Arteta response

Arsenal will have to pay more than first thought to land one of their priority transfer targets.

Arsenal may have to pay more than first expected if they want to get a deal done for one of their preferred transfer targets. The Gunners are still searching for a new forward having been left short due to injuries.

Injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have weakened an already under-performing front-line - at least for the most part - and Arteta will now be forced into the market.

One player who has been linked more than most is Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, with the forward yet to pen a new deal with the West Midlands side, although he is still tied down until 2027 with a new offer reportedly on the table. Arteta was actually asked about the possible signing of Cunha during his press conference on Friday, with his side going up against Wolves on Saturday.

“I prefer not to talk about individuals, they have a lot," he responded. "He's [Vitor Pereira] been in for a few weeks already, we know him and his ideas. he's had a really good impact and it will be a really tough match. Structure and the use is different, they have clear principles with and without the ball. Everything is important."

Wolves, who are in a relegation battle, obviously don’t want to lose their top scorer, and to that end, UOL have reported that they will demand as much as £67.5million, which is significantly more than the £60million previously reported. Although, it is added that Wolves will be willing to allow the striker to leave for a reduced fee in the summer.

That follows previous reports that suggest Cunha would have a release clause built into his contract that would lower in the case Wolves are relegated. With Wolves in total control of negotiations, Arsenal would have to hope Cunha forces his way out if they want to pay any less than the £67.5million specified, and that seems unlikely given the forward seems to have a positive relationship with the West Midlands club and its fans.
