With Kevin de Bruyne being out injured for a large portion of last season, Guardiola often deployed Alvaraz in the attacking midfield with his passion and possession abilities leading him to thrive. Along with his World Cup and two Premier League trophies, Alvarez also has two Copa America wins - the most recent coming in 2024.
Winning the 2022 World Cup made Alvarez become the first ever player to win the World Cup and a continental treble in the same season.
The Gunners have been eyeing up several striker candidates this transfer window, including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, the new Manchester United recruit Joshua Zirkzee and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres. however, it would appear that Alvaraz is now the latest target on the list but they are set to be in competition with Atletico Madrid and PSG in the race for his signature.

The Premier League champions have put a huge asking price of £70m on the forward but the newest report from Football Transfers claim the Gunners are ready to ‘match Man City’s demands, with the Gunners willing to pay €82 million (£70m) to sign him this summer.”
It is noted as well, however, that Guardiola’s side ‘will not sanction a sale unless a replacement is line up. Emergency talks are scheduled.’ Alvarez joined the Etihad club in 2022 but is said to be “unsettled in England and has begun agitating for a summer exit. Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are both interested in the 24-year-old, while Arsenal are yet to enquire, despite their admiration for the player.”
Ivan Toney is said to be a potential replacement if Alvarez departs although the report does note that ‘nothing concrete’ has yet surfaced.
