The Gunners and Red Devils were just two of the Premier League clubs said to be weighing up a summer swoop for the Brazil international. The 26-year-old had a £100 million release clause in his contract this summer, which sparked transfer talk.
That clause has now expired with Guimaraes still a Magpies star. Transfer talk has died down with clubs now not able to force a £100 million deal but Arsenal had previously been said to hold 'genuine' interest by GIVEMESPORT, alongside Manchester City with Pep Guardiola hailing the player as 'exceptional'.
The Red Devils had also been linked with the star thanks to sporting director Dan Ashworth's links with the Tyneside outfit. The Mirror reported a Manchester United 'raid' on the Magpies, but that has not come to fruition.
Guimaraes has now confronted transfer speculation ahead of the Premier League's return, sending a clear message to any potential suitors via the media. He said: “I have never said I would like to leave. I’ve always said I want to put my name in the club’s history and that hasn’t changed.

"I want to be in the Champions League again, I want to win something for the club. This is still my dream.”
The player, who has joined the club's leadership team this summer, claimed that he did not know anything about the £100 million release clause in his deal. He added: "I’m very happy. The gaffer has given me a big responsibility to be in the leadership group. I want to be a leader. Grateful to him and his staff and it’s time for me to deliver something special for them.”
