Arsenal are expected to activate an two-year option in Marcelo Flores’ contract, LondonWorld understands.

The Canadian-born Mexican, who has been capped at senior level for Mexico, has not played in Oviedo’s last nine games since they appointed new manager Alvaro Cevera.

It’s expected that Flores will spend another season on loan in Spain where he will automatically receive a Spanish passport after one year, which will therefore enable him to freely move to any European club.

Flores comes from a footballing family, with his parents and two sisters all playing at a high level and representing Mexicao at youth level.

“I would like to make my Premier League debut before I turn 19. That’s my goal,” Flores told Goal last year.

“I idolise players like [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo and Neymar, who have all done the same thing.

“Looking up to players like them, you want to match what they did because like any player, my ultimate dream is to win things like the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are confident William Saliba will agree terms on a new long-term contract.

The Frenchman is happy at the club and has become a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side this season, forming a solid partnership with Gabriel Magalhães in defence.

Saliba’s current deal expires in 2024 after the Gunners triggered an option in his contract to extend, but talks are ongoing over a bumper 5-year deal.
