Elneny is one of the longest-serving players at the club having joined Arsenal in 2016 from Basel, but his game time was restricted last season due to the plethora of midfield options at Emirates Stadium.

“It’s meant a lot to me being here for so long, it was the best eight years of my life. I love this club so much, I love the fans, I love everything about Arsenal,” Elneny told Arsenal’s official website.

“It breaks my heart - that’s why I refused to take to the field [on the lap of honour] because I was so full of emotion. But that’s life, my time here has come to an end and I’m very proud of what I’ve done for this club.

“I love these fans and I gave everything that I had. I appreciate everything they did for me, in the good moments and the bad, and they’re always going to be in my heart forever.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has joined Wrexham on a permanent deal after a successful loan spell at the Welsh side last season.

“It’s been an incredible journey, from joining at the age of eight, I’m now 22 and I’ve been there for 15 years which has been brilliant because I’ve worked with amazing people, from the academy to the first-team," said Okonkwo.

‌“It’s a bittersweet moment because I have to start a new chapter as I’ve had so many great years at Arsenal but, in the last two years, I need to keep playing and carry on my journey. I’m still really ambitious to play at international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria and I’ve not made a choice yet.

‌“I think, at 22, you are still young as a 'keeper and to have played this much, had so much experience can only help because my position is probably a lot tougher than people think.”
