Chelsea have been criticised over one of their summer transfer decisions as their struggles continue.

Joe Cole believes Chelsea should have kept one of the players they offloaded during the summer. The Blues had a high turnover of players again during the summer window, adding to their spending and allowing a number of players to leave.

It hasn't panned out too well on the back of those changes, though, at least not so far, with Mauricio Pochettino's men down in 11th place after suffering a 2-0 home defeat to London rivals Brentford on Saturday. The Blues dominated, as they often do, but that once again failed to take their chances.

That, to former star Joe Cole, begs the question why Romelu Lukaku was never given a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge, shipped out on loan one season after he arrived on a £100million deal, while he was sent on loan again this season, this time to AS Roma.

"You hear all the buzz words around the club but at the end of the day, we can’t score goals," Cole told TNT Sport. With Romelu Lukaku, for all of his faults, he was in the door.

"He was a success at Inter Milan, he scored goals at Everton and West Brom in this country, why couldn’t he score goals at Chelsea? What was wrong [with him?] He is scoring goals now for Roma. So we have to look within ourselves, what is wrong with this club at the moment?

"I don’t blame the manager one bit. Him and his staff are doing everything they can and I don’t even blame the players. They are all top players. The squad is unbalanced, but there is something wrong fundamentally with the club at the moment."

Lukaku has scored five goals in seven league games since joining Roma, which is only three less than he managed in 26 league appearances in his second stint at Chelsea.
