Here, we take a look at who votes for Oscar nominees and winners, the 2024 best picture nominations, and where to watch the ceremony in the UK.

Who is in the Academy?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership is made up of ‘film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures’.

The Academy has 18 branches, with members including actors, directors, cinematographers, makeup artists and more.

What is the Oscar nominations process?

Submissions for general entry categories are received after which preliminary voting takes place. This year the awards had a submission deadline of November 15, with preliminary voting opening on December 14 and ending on December 18.

The Oscar shortlists are announced and Academy members then vote for nominees. The 2024 Oscar shortlists were announced on December 21 and nominations votes were cast from January 11 to January 16.

After this voting has completed, the Oscar nominations are announced. The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced live on January 23.

For most Oscars categories, Academy members vote for nominees in their field, for example, actors nominate actors. Every Academy member can make a nomination for best picture.

Who votes for Oscar winners?

When it comes to choosing Oscar winners, every voting member of the Academy can vote in all of the Awards categories.

The final ballots are then tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

How are Oscar winners decided?

In many Oscar categories, the nominee that receives the most votes wins.

For best picture, a preferential ballot is used.

Voters list the films in order of preference. When one film gets more than 50% of the top votes, it is the winner.

If there is not one film which has received over 50% of the vote, then the film which got the least votes is eliminated. Voters who had the eliminated film as their first choice have their votes go towards their second choice. This continues until one of the nominees gets the majority of the vote, and becomes the winner.
