Noel Gallagher misgendered pop star Sam Smith during a rant about the “current state of pop music” and its artists.

The former Oasis frontman, 55, from Manchester, branded the Unholy hit maker a “fu**ing idiot” alongside a list of other pop stars in a foul-mouthed rant.

Speaking on Dutch radio station Kink, Noel said: “Music has become quite fractured and chart music is dominated by pop. Pop music is alright if the pop stars are cool. Sadly the stars of today are f***ing idiots.”

When asked who he thought was one of the “uncool” stars, Noel answered Sam Smith and told the host to “look at him” in a bid to back up his point.

The comments were made despite Sam having used they/them pronouns since 2019 - something the Wonderwall hit maker chose to ignore.

Noel is not the first celebrity to be slammed for misgendering the pop star. Earlier this week, Sir Bob Geldof left ITV viewers angry after appearing on This Morning.

The Irish singer repeatedly referred to the non-binary singer as a “he” whilst telling hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield an anecdote about Sam.

He said: “Sam Smith, I remember him at the microphone had his eyes closed, and he was singing away to the song, and I said, ‘Sam, they’re not the words’.

"He goes, ‘oh yeah, sorry’. Because we had re-written the words for I think the Ebola crisis in west Africa.

"And he says ‘sorry’, so off he goes, he closes his eyes again and he starts singing the original words.

"I said ‘Sam’, and he goes ‘oh yes, sorry, every year in school I have to sing this song’."

Last month, during an episode of Good Morning Britain, host Richard Madeley also misgendered Sam.

The 66-year-old was discussing the pop star’s latest music video, when he labelled them a “he”. Co-host Susanna Reid corrected him and he quickly apologised.
