Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch, has admitted that he wanted his role in the late singer’s upcoming biopic to be played by George Clooney.

Back To Black, named after Amy’s hit 2006 song, will document the London-born singer’s rise to fame before she died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011, at age 27.

Eddie Marsan, 54, will play the role of Amy’s dad, however 73-year-old Mitch has joked that the Still Life actor is “not very good-looking” and he would have preferred Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney to portray him.

He told The Mail on Sunday: "I told my friend that Eddie was playing me and he said – excuse my French – ‘Eddie f****** Marsan! He’s not very good-looking.’ I said, ‘I know – I wanted George Clooney!’”

However, Mitch is backing the new documentary after reading the first script which he said made him "look like a saint”.

The 2015 documentary, Amy, didn’t shine a positive light on Mitch. However, Back To Black director Sam Taylor-Johnson aims to offer an alternative view with this upcoming biopic.

The late Amy Winehouse herself will be played by Marisa Abela, whilst her mum, Janis, will be portrayed by EastEnders star Juliet Cowan.

Skins star Jack O’Connell will play Amy’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, and Mrs Harris Goes to Paris actor Lesley Manville will play the singer’s grandmother.

Last month, Mitch defended the casting of BBC Industry star Marisa after fans said she looks nothing like Amy.

He told TMZ that Abela was a "great choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like Amy", and suggested that "too much emphasis is placed on looks".

There is no confirmed release date for Back To Black, but filming has begun.
