Wennington fire: Huge blaze engulfs homes as 100 firefighters battle flames in village

A huge fire has broken out and engulfed homes in Wennington as 100 firefighters battle the flames.

Footage broadcast by Sky News shows flames inside the burnt out shells of buildings at The Green, Wennington, as vast clouds of thick dark grey smoke pour into the air.

It comes as the UK sees record-breaking temperatures of above 40C as the UK blisters in a punishing heatwave.

A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said: “We’ve got 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters dealing with this blaze on The Green in Wennington.”

One witness shared a photo of the size of the fire, adding: “Absolutely crazy to see! Hope everyone in Wennington is safe!”

The capital’s fire service has declared a major incident, as firefighters rush to extinguish blazes in Croydon, Havering and Dartford this afternoon (Tuesday, July 19).
