Storm Eunice 2022: O2 arena roof ‘shredded’ and trees uprooted across London

The O2 arena roof is being shredded by Storm Eunice, while trees have been ripped down and panels torn off buildings, as Londoners share the impact of the damage on the city.
The Met Office issued a red weather warning for Storm Eunice across London and the southeast of England between 10am and 3pm today, Friday February 18.

Hide AdAnd reports of closures, delays and damage have been mounting up throughout the day.
Closures have affected London’s roads and airports, including the QEII Bridge, City Airport, and the London Eye.
While parks have remained locked and bin collections delayed across the capital.
The roof of the O2 arena has been filmed ripping away from the building’s structure.

Hide AdFootage shared on Twitter shows layer of the dome being shredded by strong blasts of wind.
Ben Hubbard who filmed the video said: “In the last 45 minutes it started off as one small part in the corner.
“It went right up to the centre and now the second, third and fourth panel are being completely shredded.
“I am not sure there is anything that can be done, this is serious damage.”

Hide AdOne Twitter user based in Walthamstow said the storm had “destroyed” fencing at the junction of Chingford Road and Aveling Park Road.
They added that it was “really dangerous”.
While property firm Compton Reeback shared a dramatic image of a car crushed underneath a fallen tree.
They wrote: “Tree down in Castellain Road, Maida Vale W9. Stay safe everyone…”
A tree has fallen down in Ealing and is blocking the road opposite West Acton station.
The Met Police and the local council have been made aware.

Hide AdAnother tree has fallen across Battersea Bridge Road after being uprooted by the wind.
Elsewhere, record gusts of 122mph winds have been reported in the Isle of Wight - believed to be a new top wind speed for England.
And awkward landing attempts have been made at Heathrow, the UK’s biggest airport.
