What does the Met Office say for the long-range weather forecast for the UK? (24 April - 3 May)

“Mostly dry to start this period but with a few showers in places, possibly heavy in the south. Temperatures perhaps near normal for many but warm in parts of the south. Feeling cold along eastern coasts with strong east or northeasterly winds.

“Through the week, high pressure is looking to dominate in the north with plenty of dry and bright weather here. Further south, a little more unsettled with a risk of some showers or longer spells of rain at times, heavy in places.

“Conditions are likely to become more settled and mainly dry across the whole of the UK as we move into early May. Temperatures likely to be close to or above normal for this time of year.”

Is there likely to be a heatwave in May?

Around this time of the month in March, parts of London experienced temperatures that exceeded those in the popular holiday destination of Ibiza in Spain, leading to rumours that a heatwave could be on the way in late April.

More concise weather forecasts however confirm that a heatwave is now unlikely this month, but there is the possibility that a heatwave could happen in May, as we edge closer to the summer months.

The Met Office does confirm that for London, temperatures are ‘likely to be above normal’ for this time of year, but it is not yet clear if that indicates a heatwave.

A longer weather forecast, from Wednesday, 4 May to Wednesday, 18 May says: “Becoming more settled into early May, with a good deal of fine conditions for most through the remainder of the period.

“A chance of some brief unsettled periods at times. Temperatures are most likely to be above normal.”
