The proposed Bakerloo line extenstion would be a major engineering project, involving new Tube stations and tunnels.
The project woud connect the line further into southeast London, extending it from Elephant & Castle, through Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate, and on to Lewisham.

But the extension will need a funding agreement between the government and TfL. The two bodies were involved in bitter negotiations before a general funding deal was reached last year.
Safeguarded land - Lambeth to Lewisham
A key milestone for the Bakerloo line extension was reached in 2021, when Grant Shapps, as transport secretary at the time, issued directions to safeguard land needed for its development.
Although the line currently ends at Elephant & Castle, work would be required between Lambeth North and Lewisham.

The project would include an expanded Elephant & Castle station with a new ticket hall.
On Old Kent Road there would be two new stations - Burgess Park and Old Kent Road.
And then there would be further stations at New Cross Gate and Lewisham.

New tunnels would need to be bored between Lambeth North and Elephant & Castle, and between Elephant & Castle and Lewisham.

Train stabling would need to be provided at a site off Wearside Road, south of Lewisham town centre.
The primary worksite would be at New Cross Gate for the overall project, as well as for the station. A secondary worksite would be in Old Kent Road.
Bakerloo extension to Hayes and Beckenham Junction
A second phase of the extension beyond Lewisham to Hayes and Beckenham Junction could involve making the National Rail line via Catford to Hayes route a London Underground operation.
