With the M25 closed between junctions 10 and 11 last weekend, parts of Surrey were expected to bear the brunt of the diversions.

Four more closures are planned in the months ahead to enable works to improve the Wisley Interchange with the A3.

Over the weekend, Surrey Highways reported queues building up on the M25 slip roads and in parts of Surrey on the diversion route.

But on Saturday morning, it was all quiet on the West Byfleet front, apart from an occasional lorry or National Express coach.

We asked locals what they thought of the closure and the diversion..

Rosie said: "The traffic is not nearly as bad as everybody has been saying it's going to be. It's a bit like it was in Covid - just quiet. It's been lovely, walking and being able to hear the birds and to enjoy a lovely day out.

"I think the next lot of closures will be more in the summer and I think it will be a lot, lot worse.

"But I think everybody [this weekend] has taken heed of the warnings and is just enjoying a really nice, quiet Saturday."

Les told LondonWorld the M25 closure is just the latest in a number of issues for residents of the village.

"My wife and I are both in our 80s - I'm 87, my wife is 83 - and we've both said to all our friends and neighbours, and a lot of people have agreed, that if we were in our 40s or 50s we would leave West Byfleet now," he said.

"We've already had the chaos of the new, huge eight-storey building being built, road chaos for months and months and months in the last few years here and now with the closure of the M25 and things like this - 300 houses being built down the road - that means 600 people, probably an extra 600 cars - we would leave West Byfleet."
