Tube strikes beginning on Friday (January 5) are expected to have knock-on effects for anyone travelling in London.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned that the staggered industrial action by RMT members will have a serious impact on services from Sunday.

Staff working on the Elizabeth line, London Overground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), trams and buses are not involved in strike action.

But TfL said in a statement: "Some services will be much busier than normal and affected by station closures where stations also serve London Underground lines. Queuing and one-way systems may be in place.

"Plan ahead, check before you travel and leave more time for your journey."

TfL expects to impact Tube services on the following days:

  • Sunday (January 7) - Tube services will close earlier than normal. Customers are advised to complete Tube journeys by 5.30pm
  • Monday to Thursday (January 8-11), severe disruption is expected, with little-to-no service expected to run
  • Friday (January 12), Tube services will start later than normal with a good service expected by midday

The RMT union says it wants to see full staff travel facilities for all Tube workers restored and has criticised bosses for freezing pay bands, warning that it will create a two-tier workforce.

Announcing the strikes last month, general secretary Mick Lynch said: "The refusal of TfL to restore staff travel facilities and create a two-tier workforce is also unacceptable. Our members have made it clear that they are prepared to take action and we urge TfL to improve their offer to avert disruption in the capital."

A TfL spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that the RMT called this action over our full and final offer of a 5% pay increase. We have been clear in constructive discussions that this is the most we can afford whilst ensuring that we can operate safely, reliably and sustainably. We encourage the RMT to engage with us to avoid disruption for Londoners."
