The victim was lying on a mattress on the floor at an address in Islington when she was raped by Douglas.

Police were called to the address and the woman was provided with specialist support. She was taken to a Havens centre.

Douglas was arrested later that day and charged on July 5, 2020.

The Havens are a network of specialist sexual assault referral centres (SARCs) located across London to provide help to victims of sexual violence.

A Havens and UCL study published in 2018 included the finding that 80% of the young female victims of sexual assault were diagnosed with a mental health disorder four to five months after the incident.

Katie Russell, from the charity Rape Crisis, which supports victims of serious sexual assault, said: “We need to be mindful that only about 10 per cent of women who are the victims of rape report it.

“The vast majority of the women and girls we work with never go to the police, so these figures are quite a small fraction of the overall number. But victims can come to us and they will be believed, not judged.”

Detective Sergeant Sam Lockstone of the Central North Serious Sexual Offences Team said: "My colleagues and I are totally committed to bringing to justice those men who commit sexual offences against women.

"This case demonstrates how we will work with victims to support them from the outset and throughout the process of putting offenders before the courts.

"I want to thank the victim in this case and praise the strength and determination that she has shown.

"I also want men to reflect on this case. A woman not being in a position to force you away from her does not represent consent. If you attempt to exploit a woman for sex in such a situation then you are raping that woman."

More than 18,000 sexual offences were recorded by police in London during 2021, including 7,267 rape offences in the last 12 months. Islington recorded 201 rapes and 257 other sexual offences.
