Boris Johnson & Rishi Sunak broke Covid laws: how much were they fined, will they resign & who is wife Carrie?

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, his wife, Carrie Johnson and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, have all been fined for breaching Covid-19 regulations while attending a party in Downing Street in June 2020.

The gathering, which took place in the cabinet room in Downing Street, saw Boris Johnson presented with a birthday cake. It has been reported that food, soft drinks and alcohol were available at the party.

The Metropolitan Police investigation, which is called Operation Hillman, is looking at 12 separate gatherings over eight days.

One of these 12 gatherings concerned a birthday party held in honour of the Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Downing Street on June 19, 2020.

The Covid-19 rules at the time of the birthday party prohibited indoor gatherings.

How much were they fined?

It has been reported that Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and Carrie Johnson were all fined £50.

The decision by the Metropolitan Police to fine Boris Johnson means he is now the only British Prime Minister to have broken the law while in office.

Will Boris Johnson and/or Rishi Sunak resign?

Boris Johnson has said he has paid his FPN, apologised and now believes he should be allowed to stay on as Prime Minister.

“I think the best thing I can do now is, having settled the fine, is focus on the job in hand,” said Johnson.

Rishi Sunak has also apologised and like Boris Johnson he too is refusing to resign.

“I understand that for figures in public office, the rules must be applied stringently in order to maintain public confidence,” said Rishi Sunack.

“I respect the decision that has been made and have paid the fine,” he said.

“I know people sacrificed a great deal during Covid, and they will find this situation upsetting. I deeply regret the frustration and anger caused and I am sorry.

“Like the prime minister, I am focused on delivering for the British people at this challenging time.”

Who is Carrie Johnson?

Boris Johnson’ wife Carrie celebrated turning 34 in March - the couple have two children together.

Her maiden name is Symonds and before entering No. 11 Downing Street in 2019 she described herself as a political and climate activist.

Could Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunack and Carrie Johnson receive more fines?

Yes. The Metropolitian Police are investigating at least two other gatherings Boris Johnson is believed to have attended.

It has also been reported that the police are investigating a gathering held in the flat above No. 11 Downing Street in which Boris Johnson and wife Carrie live.

It is not known when the police will be in a position provide a further update.
