The world said goodbye to one of the great vocalists in popular music this week with the passing of Tina Turner, aged 83.
For many of us, the singer was known for her mega-hits in the 1980s which culminated in The Best, one of the most recognisable pop songs ever recorded.
But, having been born in 1939, Tina Turner proved herself as a singing great in the 1960s with songs such as River Deep - Mountain High and Proud Mary, as a double act with husband Ike.
The partnership was successful musically, but Ike was abusive and in the late 1970s Tina freed herself and remade herself. She became known for her formidable vocals, performance and presence.
A statement on Tina Turner’s Instagram page reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
